Simple but sensational

22-year-old Swedish indie singer Lykke Li’s name sounds like a play on the Norwedian word lykkelig, meaning “happy”. The similarity seems rather fitting considering the effervescence Lykke Li displays both onstage and on record.
Her disparate debut, Youth Novels starts, not inexplicably, like Madonna with ‘Melodies & Desires’ a Madge-esque spoken monologue, then ‘Dance Dance Dance’ – the first time she sets free her coochy-coo voice, and one of my favourite songs in the album. Thereafter the highlights are many: ‘I’m Good, I’m Gone’, ‘Let It Fall’, and of course, the knockout single in ‘Little Bit’, are all brilliantly pure, satisfyingly good smart pop music.
